Forgiveness is the final form of love. –Reinhold Niebuhr
“Patricia,” Grandma Rose snapped.
“Rose,” Aunt Patricia snorted back.
Grandma Rose and Aunt Patricia were sisters, but they had not spoken to each other for 20 years. They couldn’t stand to be near each other at family events and holidays. The root of their conflict was a well-known apple pie recipe left by their mother, a beloved baker in their community. When she passed away, both sisters fought over who would inherit this treasured recipe. Grandma Rose felt she was entitled to the recipe, but Aunt Patricia believed she should have rights to it as well. What started as a sibling rivalry escalated into sneaky attempts to find and claim the recipe, ultimately leading to its loss and a complete breakdown in their relationship.
Today, Grandma Rose’s daughter invited Aunt Patricia over, hoping to mend the fractured bonds. The reunion began with tense silence.
“You could have called at least once in the last twenty years, Rose,” Aunt Patricia broke the silence first.
“You have a phone, too, Patricia,” Grandma Rose retorted. “Why did you expect me to call first?”
“Because you’re the eldest,” Aunt Patricia argued.
“Now you know I’m the eldest?” Grandma Rose snapped. “Where was that sentiment when you stole what a firstborn should have inherited?”
“Here we go again,” Aunt Patricia exclaimed. “Just because you’re the firstborn doesn’t mean you automatically inherit Mama’s recipe!”
“Of course it does!” Grandma Rose exclaimed back.
“Unbelievable,” Aunt Patricia muttered, rising from her seat. “You haven’t changed in twenty years. I shouldn’t have come.”
“Then why did you come?” Grandma Rose countered sharply.
“Because I miss my sister, okay!” Aunt Patricia blurted out, tears in her eyes. “I mourn the years we didn’t spend together, and I’m tired of arguing with the only family I have left.”
There was a long pause before Grandma Rose spoke, her voice quivering, “I miss you too, Patricia. I can’t believe we let things get this bad.”
“Me neither,” Aunt Patricia chuckled, a glint of old warmth returning to her eyes. “Remember how they used to call us the bullheaded sisters? Now I understand why.” They both laughed, the ice of years beginning to melt.
“Can we let go of the past now? I don’t want to spend the rest of my golden years without you,” Aunt Patricia said earnestly. Without a word, Grandma Rose stood and embraced her sister, tears of relief and reconciliation wetting both their cheeks; both sisters decided to forgive and let go.
After Aunt Patricia left, Grandma Rose, feeling a surge of nostalgia, went through some old belongings she had stowed away. As she moved items aside, a piece of paper fluttered to the floor. Picking it up, she realized it was the long-lost apple pie recipe. Without hesitation, she tore the paper into pieces and discarded it, letting go of the final symbol of their dispute. The next day, Grandma Rose gave Aunt Patricia a piece of apple pie.
“I made this with my own version of the recipe. It’s not Mama’s, but if you like it, it can be our new family recipe.”
Aunt Patricia smiled, tears in her eyes. “I’d like that very much, Rose.”
