Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. –Anatole France
Alice loved animals and always had. She was the type who’d strike up a conversation with anyone walking a dog, claiming, “I miss having a pet of my own.” So when her neighbor asked if she could pet-sit Max, their oversized golden retriever, Alice jumped at the chance. How hard could it be? Max arrived with a wagging tail and enough energy to power a small city.
“Oh, you’re just a big ball of fluff, aren’t you?” Alice cooed, bending down to scratch his ears. Max responded by nearly knocking her over with an enthusiastic headbutt. “Alright, easy there, big guy. We’re going to be best friends.” Alice decided to start the day with a nice, relaxing walk.
“Come on, Max! Let’s get some fresh air.” Leash in hand, she opened the front door, imagining a serene stroll around the block. What she didn’t expect was Max spotting a squirrel two houses down and taking off like a rocket.
“Oh no! MAX!” Alice yelled, gripping the leash as if her life depended on it—and in that moment, it did. Max tore down the street, dragging Alice behind him. She stumbled, lost her hat, then her glasses, but still held on, screaming apologies at neighbors as they watched her fly past. When she wrestled Max back home, Alice was panting harder than the dog.
“Okay… walks… might need some rethinking,” she gasped, collapsing onto the couch. Max, on the other hand, seemed energized by the adventure, bouncing around the living room like it was an agility course. Things quickly escalated. In his excitement, Max knocked over a potted plant, sending soil flying across the carpet. Alice groaned, grabbing a broom, but the more she swept, the more Max thought it was a game. He raced through the dirt, turning the cleanup into a full-blown disaster.
“Max! No! Stop!” she cried as he gleefully scattered soil from one end of the house to the other. After a particularly chaotic cleanup session, Alice shuffled to the kitchen, forgetting to close the door behind her—big mistake. Max found the bag of dog treats on the counter and devoured the whole thing while Alice wasn’t looking. By the time she noticed, Max was bouncing off the walls—literally. He shot from room to room, leaving a trail of chaos in his wake.
When her nosy neighbor, Gladys, popped in to see how things were going, she found Alice covered in dirt, chasing Max around the couch. Gladys burst into laughter.
“I see Max is keeping you on your toes!” Alice, frazzled but determined, tried to act nonchalant.
“Oh, it’s all under control,” she lied, just as Max leaped onto the dining table.
The final straw came the next morning. Alice forgot to lock the front gate, and Max bolted, disappearing into the neighborhood. What followed was nothing short of a spectacle: Max ran straight to the park and stole a large slab of steak from a barbecue party. Alice chased him for half an hour. Later, as Alice flopped onto the grass next to panting Max, she sighed.
“Who knew dog-sitting was an extreme sport?”
When Max’s owners returned, Alice gave them a play-by-play of their chaotic few days. Despite the disasters, she’d grown fond of the lovable furball. Because, honestly, what’s life without a little chaos?
