Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. –Helen Keller
Ruth, a retired librarian with a soft spot for puzzles, had recently started a neighborhood puzzle exchange. It was the perfect way to keep her mind sharp and connect with her friends. This week, she was particularly excited—a serene, 1,000-piece seaside puzzle sat on her dining table, just begging to be assembled. She poured herself a cup of tea, settled into her chair, and prepared for a relaxing afternoon.
After several hours of meticulously sorting the edges, Ruth noticed something peculiar. A piece she tried to fit into the sky wasn’t quite right—it had a distinctly urban look.
“That’s odd,” she muttered. She continued, but soon more suspicious pieces popped up—a zebra in the middle of her beach, a chunk of city skyline among the waves.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake!” she exclaimed, inspecting the box, convinced the manufacturer had made a blunder. Perplexed, she decided to call Helen, her puzzle exchange buddy.
“Helen, you’re not going to believe this,” Ruth began, describing the bizarre mishmash of pieces. Helen chuckled on the other end.
“Funny, you should say that. I’ve been working on my puzzle, and I found a giraffe in the middle of what’s supposed to be a landscape. Unless a giraffe took a holiday to the mountains, I think we’ve got a mix-up on our hands.”
Ruth and Helen soon realized that their puzzles were somehow mixed up. Laughing at the absurdity, they called Larry and Betty, the other members of their puzzle exchange. To no one’s surprise, they’d encountered odd pieces too—a piece of a beach ball in the middle of a cityscape and a horse wandering through abstract patterns.
The group gathered at Ruth’s house for a “puzzle party,” bringing all their scattered pieces to sort them out. As they sat around Ruth’s dining table, each with their respective piles of mismatched pieces, Ruth suddenly had an idea.
“Wait, why don’t we mix them all together and make one giant puzzle?” she suggested, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
“You mean, make a puzzle out of… cityscapes, animals, beaches, and whatever else we’ve got? That sounds impossible.” Larry raised an eyebrow.
“Or incredibly fun,” Ruth countered. The group looked at each other, then shrugged. “Why not?” they replied together.
With that, they dumped all their pieces into one big pile. The chaos was immediate—sunsets mingled with city skylines, stray animals wandered through strange landscapes, and abstract objects appeared where they least belonged. But as they worked together, piecing together their mismatched puzzle, the picture began to take shape.
“Now that’s some modern art!” Betty laughed as she placed a zebra next to a skyscraper.
The group bantered and shared stories, each person offering advice as easily as they passed puzzle pieces. Hours later, they stood back and admired their creation: a quirky, mismatched masterpiece of beaches, animals, and cityscapes blending into one another in the most ridiculous way possible.
“I think we’ve created a work of art,” Helen declared.
“Let’s frame it and hang it at the senior center. It’ll give everyone a good laugh!” Ruth grinned.
And so they did. The puzzle was glued, framed, and proudly displayed at the senior center, symbolizing their creativity, teamwork, and shared laughter. As they stood back, Ruth turned to her friends with a smile.
“What do you say we make this a monthly tradition?”
The group eagerly agreed, already excited for their next mismatched masterpiece.
