Sometimes, the smallest things take up the most room in your heart. –Alan Alexander Milne
Martha woke up on her birthday with a heavy heart. It was the first one she would spend without her beloved husband, Tom. The house felt emptier than ever, and the silence was a constant reminder of her loss. She made herself a cup of tea and sat by the window, trying to distract herself from the view outside, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Tom.
Just as she was beginning to feel the weight of her loneliness, the doorbell rang. Martha wasn’t expecting anyone, so she was surprised to see a deliveryman standing on her porch with a package.
“Delivery for Mrs. Martha Johnson,” he said with a warm smile, handing her the box.
“Thank you,” Martha replied, puzzled. She brought the package inside and carefully opened it. To her astonishment, she found a letter with Tom’s familiar handwriting on it. Her heart skipped a beat. With trembling hands, Martha opened the letter and began to read:
Dear Martha,
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you. I wanted to make sure you knew how much I love you, especially on your birthday. Remember our last anniversary, when I said I had a surprise planned for your next birthday? This is it. I knew this day would be difficult for you, so I arranged for this package to be delivered to remind you of our wonderful life together. I hope this brings you some comfort and a smile on your face.
With all my love, Tom.
Tears streamed down Martha’s face as she read the letter. She carefully opened the smaller box and found a beautiful locket, inside of which was a tiny photo of the two of them, taken on their honeymoon many years ago. Martha held the locket close to her heart, feeling a wave of love and nostalgia. She opened the letter again, and a few more notes from Tom fell out, each one filled with memories of their life together:
Remember our first date at the county fair? You were so excited about the Ferris wheel, and I was terrified. But holding your hand made everything better.
Our first home, where we painted the kitchen bright yellow because you said it would bring sunshine into our lives. It did, every single day.
The night we danced under the stars on our 25th anniversary. You wore that beautiful blue dress, and I felt like the luckiest man alive.
Martha decided to wear the locket every day, a small piece of Tom that she could keep close to her heart. She looked at herself in the mirror, the locket shining softly against her chest, and felt a connection to Tom that transcended time and space. As the day turned to evening, Martha lit a candle in memory of Tom and whispered a thank you to the love of her life. She realized that while he was no longer physically present, his love and shared memories would always be with her.
