Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. –William Morris

“These are the finest sheets in the world, Dad. Pure Egyptian cotton!” Albert’s daughter had said, handing him the package like she was bestowing a royal gift. Albert eyed the gift with skepticism. His old cotton sheets had served him well for years, but his daughter’s enthusiasm and talk of “luxury” persuaded him to give the new ones a try. That afternoon, Albert decided to make the switch.

“Alright, Egyptian cotton,” he muttered, “let’s see what you’ve got.” The first sign of trouble came when he tried to put the fitted sheet on. Every time he stretched it over one corner, it slipped off the opposite side. Albert grumbled under his breath, wrestling with the sheet as if it were a living thing determined to escape.

“King Solomon never had this problem,” he grunted, pulling the sheet with all his might. Finally, after ten minutes of battle, the fitted sheet appeared to surrender, staying in place just long enough for Albert to step back and admire his work. But as he reached for the top sheet, the fitted sheet sprang free, snapping back off the mattress like a rebellious teenager.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Albert barked. After another round of tucking, smoothing, and nearly falling face-first onto the bed, he finally got both sheets secured. Or so he thought.

Later that night, Albert crawled into bed, expecting a luxurious sleep. But as soon as he turned over, the blankets slid right off the bed and onto the floor. He sighed, reaching to grab them, only to find himself half-sliding off the slick sheets.

By the middle of the night, Albert had slipped off the bed twice, tangled himself in the top sheet like a mummy, and spent more time retrieving the fallen blankets than actually sleeping. His frustration grew with every failed attempt to get comfortable. The next morning, bleary-eyed and grumpy, Albert called his daughter.

“These sheets? They’re too slippery! I almost launched myself into the wall trying to turn over!” he complained.

“Dad, you’ll get used to it. It’s the price of luxury!” His daughter just laughed.

Not willing to admit defeat just yet, Albert decided to give the slippery sheets one more chance. Determined not to let them get the best of him, he armed himself with bed clips. But he had stretched one clip a little too tight. With a loud snap, the clip suddenly gave way, ricocheting off the mattress and smacking him square in the eye.

“Ahhh!” he yelled, clutching his face. That was the last straw. The next morning, Albert gleefully returned to his old, dependable cotton sheets to the bed.

“Ahh, much better,” he sighed, smoothing them out without resistance. When his daughter called again to ask how the Egyptian cotton was holding up, Albert chuckled, “They’ve been retired, just like me. No more slippery sheets for this old man!”
